FX solutions

FX solutions for business: FX providers compared on what they publish.

33 FX specialists and 10 multi-currency accounts, side by side: the exchange margin each one publishes, whether it offers forward contracts, what account you hold and where it is licensed. For most specialists, the comparison starts with a quote.

From each provider's own price list, fee schedule, terms and hedging pages, checked October 2026. "As low as" marketing figures are never used as a rate.

Bank

The rate you are shown

Convenient, often the most expensive: the margin is built into the rate and rarely stated. Rates for larger amounts are negotiable.

Multi-currency account

A published price, in an app

Wise, Airwallex, Revolut Business and others publish their margin and give you account details in several currencies. Few offer forward contracts.

FX specialist

A dealer and hedging tools

Brokers and payment institutions that quote per trade, offer forward contracts and assign a dealer. Best for larger amounts and known future payments.

Published prices

10 of 33 specialists publish a price.

The rest say the rate is set when you trade. That makes them hard to compare from the outside, but not more expensive by default: a dealer quoting per trade can beat a published price on a large amount. What matters is the margin over the mid-market rate on your amount, in writing.

Ask each provider for three things before you sign: the margin over mid-market on your typical amount and currency pair, any fee per payment on top, and the deposit for a forward contract.

What a margin costs on 100,000.

The margin is the gap between the mid-market rate and the rate you get. Every 0.1% is 100 on a 100,000 conversion, in whatever currency you convert from.

Hedging

Spot, forward, limit order: the three tools that matter.

  • Spot

Exchange now at today's rate, settled within two working days. Every provider on this page does it.

  • Forward contract

Fix today's rate for a payment on a later date, usually up to 12 or 24 months ahead, against a deposit. You must complete it even if the rate turns in your favour.

  • Limit or stop order

Set a target rate and the provider exchanges automatically when the market reaches it, or caps the loss if it moves the other way.

19 of the 21 specialists whose hedging page we read offer forward contracts. Use the "Offers forwards" filter in the table.

By what you need.

Your questions, answered.

What is the cheapest way for a business to make international payments?

Compare the FX margin, not the transfer fee: on a large payment the margin is most of the cost. Of the 33 FX providers on this page, 10 publish a price (Amnis, CurrencyFair, Currenxie, Finmo, Sokin, WorldFirst, YouBiz, Atlantic Money, Bound, LianLian Global); the rest quote per trade, so ask two or three for a quote on the same amount and currency pair on the same day, and compare each with the mid-market rate.

What is an FX margin?

The difference between the mid-market rate (the midpoint between what banks pay each other to buy and sell a currency) and the rate you are given. A 0.5% margin on a 100,000 conversion costs 500. Some providers show the margin as a separate fee; most build it into the rate.

Why do so many FX specialists not publish their rates?

Their price depends on your volume, the currency pair and the product (spot or forward). The price lists of most dealers say the rate is set at the time of the trade. That is not a reason to accept it: ask for the margin over mid-market in writing.

What is a forward contract?

An agreement to exchange an amount at a rate fixed today, for a payment on a later date. It protects a known future payment, such as a supplier invoice due in three months, from a rate move. Most providers ask for a deposit and can ask for more if the rate moves against you. You must complete the exchange even if the rate later turns in your favour.

Broker or multi-currency account: which do I need?

A multi-currency account (Wise, Airwallex, Revolut Business) suits frequent payments at a published price, done in an app. An FX specialist suits larger or irregular amounts, forward contracts and a person who deals for you. Many businesses use both: the account for everyday payments and the specialist for large conversions and hedging.

Is my money safe with an FX provider?

Payment and e-money institutions must safeguard the money you send them for payments, kept apart from their own money, but it is not covered by a deposit guarantee scheme as a bank deposit is. Check each provider's licence on its page. Deposits held against forward contracts can be treated differently from payment money: ask how they are held.

Can I receive international payments in my own name, in local currency?

Yes, with a provider that issues local collection accounts: a UK sort code, a US account number or a EUR IBAN in your company's name, so customers and marketplaces pay you as a local payment. The 'What you hold' column shows what each provider gives you. FX dealers usually give you no account: you pay them from your own bank and they pay your beneficiary.
