Tax and VAT

On Teachable Payments, Teachable files the tax.

With Teachable Payments, Teachable calculates, collects and pays sales tax, VAT and GST on your behalf in more than 45 markets, and sends buyers a tax invoice for every purchase. On your own Stripe account (custom payment gateway) it does none of this: the tax is yours to handle.

  • The Standard bundle adds 0.5% to sales where tax is charged; Go Global waives it.
  • Prices can include tax, or have it added where buyers expect that.
  • Teachable's terms do not call it the merchant of record: you remain the seller.
  • Outside the 41 Teachable Payments countries, only the custom gateway is open to you.

Card payments and payouts run through Stripe.

Your account

Teachable pays in your school's currency.

On Teachable Payments, fees and payouts are set by your school's country, and money settles in its local currency. Three things that follow:

  • Your school's country sets the rates

A UK school pays 1.5% + £0.20 on UK cards; a US school 2.9% + $0.30 on US cards. International cards cost more everywhere.

  • A local bank account in that country

Payouts go to a bank account in your local currency through Stripe Express, so you need an account with local details there.

  • Outside the 41 countries, tax is on you

With your own Stripe account, Teachable does not collect or pay VAT or sales tax. US schools on it also pay a 2% integration fee.
