Tax and VAT

Payhip handles VAT and sales tax in four markets.

For digital products sold to buyers in the EU and the UK, Payhip acts as your reseller and is fully responsible for the VAT: it adds the rate of the buyer's country and files and pays it every quarter. In the US it is a marketplace facilitator (from 1 July 2026) and in Canada a digital platform operator, so it collects and pays sales tax there too.

  • The tax is taken out of each sale with Payhip's fee, so you receive the price net of VAT.
  • You can turn off the EU and UK VAT handling and deal with it yourself.
  • Other taxes you set up are collected for you and passed to you: you report and pay those yourself.
  • You choose whether the tax is added on top of your price or included in it.

Your account

With Payhip, your payment account is your bank.

Buyers pay into the PayPal or Stripe account you connect, so the account behind it decides where the money lands, in which currency and at what cost:

  • Stripe pays out to a bank account

Stripe sends your balance to the bank account you give it, in the countries Stripe supports. Choose one that can receive the currencies you sell in.

  • PayPal charges to convert

Money kept in PayPal is converted or withdrawn at PayPal's rates. Moving it to a bank account in the same currency avoids a second conversion.

  • Pick the plan by sales

Above about $970 a month in sales, Plus ($29 + 2%) costs less than Free (5%). Above $3,500 a month, Pro ($99, no fee) costs less than Plus.

FAQ

Your questions, answered.

How much does Payhip cost?

The Free Forever plan costs nothing a month and takes 5% of each sale. Plus costs $29 a month and takes 2%. Pro costs $99 a month and takes nothing. PayPal or Stripe fees apply on every plan, and all three have the same features.

Does Payhip handle VAT?

Yes, for digital products sold to buyers in the EU and the UK: Payhip acts as your reseller and files and pays the VAT. It also collects and pays sales tax in the US (from 1 July 2026) and Canada. Taxes elsewhere are collected for you to report and pay yourself.

When does Payhip pay me?

Straight away. Buyers pay into your own PayPal, Stripe or other connected account at the moment of the sale, so Payhip never holds your money.

Who is behind Payhip?

Payhip Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (number 08386910), based in London.
