Tax and VAT

Gumroad is the seller, so it handles the tax.

Since 1 January 2025 Gumroad is the merchant of record for all sales. It resells your product to the buyer, and collects and pays sales tax, VAT and GST wherever it has an obligation. You do not register for VAT in the buyer's country and cannot choose to leave VAT off.

  • EU and UK VAT is added at checkout on digital products. Buyers with a VAT ID can claim it back from Gumroad.
  • Reduced VAT rates apply to e-books and other e-publications when you mark the product as one.
  • Physical products shipped into the EU have no VAT at checkout: the buyer pays import VAT to customs.
  • You still pay income tax on what Gumroad pays you, in your own country.

Company

The companies behind Gumroad.

  • Runs Gumroad and resells your products

    Gumroad, Inc.

    United States

Card payments and payouts run through Stripe and PayPal.

Your account

Gumroad pays into a bank in your own country.

The money reaches you in your local currency, converted when each sale is made. Three things to know before you choose the account:

  • Same country as the company

A business is paid only to a bank account in the country where it is registered. A UK company needs a UK account; a US LLC needs a US one.

  • No USD balance outside USD countries

Gumroad converts each sale into your local currency. To keep dollars, you need a country whose payout currency is USD.

  • PayPal costs 2%

Where bank payouts are not offered, Gumroad pays to PayPal in USD with a 2% fee, and PayPal charges again to convert or withdraw.

FAQ

Your questions, answered.

How much does Gumroad take from a sale?

10% + $0.50 on direct sales, plus card processing of 2.9% + $0.30. Once your paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales that month cost 5% + $0.50. Sales through Gumroad's Discover marketplace cost a flat 30%, processing included. There is no monthly fee.

Does Gumroad handle VAT and sales tax?

Yes. Gumroad has been the merchant of record for all sales since 1 January 2025, so it collects and pays sales tax and VAT in the places where it has an obligation. You still owe income tax on your payouts.

Can Gumroad pay me to Wise or Payoneer?

Gumroad names Payoneer and Wise among the payout methods it does not support. It pays to a local bank account in your currency in 120 countries, and to PayPal in USD elsewhere.

Can a company sell on Gumroad if the owner lives abroad?

Yes. A business must be paid to a bank account in the country where it is registered, but the owner can live in another country and give their real home address.
