Tax and VAT

Paddle is the seller, so it handles the tax.

Paddle is an authorised reseller of your software, not a payment provider. It is registered for tax in more than 100 jurisdictions, so it calculates, charges and pays VAT, GST and sales tax on every sale where the law requires it, and issues the invoices. The tax risk sits with Paddle.

  • Business buyers with a valid VAT ID pay no VAT at checkout: the reverse charge applies.
  • Your sale to Paddle is business to business, so the reverse charge usually applies to it too.
  • Paddle sends you an invoice with each payout, so you do not invoice it.
  • You still pay income or corporation tax on your payouts.

Your account

Paddle pays free when the currencies match.

Paddle sends payouts by local transfer at no cost when the payout currency is the local currency of your bank's country. Anything else goes by SWIFT for $15, €15 or £15. Three ways to keep that at zero:

  • Hold USD with US details

A USD payout to an account with a US routing and account number goes by ACH, free. Several business accounts give non-US companies US details.

  • Or EUR to a eurozone IBAN

A EUR balance paid to a eurozone IBAN goes by SEPA, free. Paddle adds up to 1.5% if it converts your balance first.

  • Payoneer is an option

Paddle pays to Payoneer as well as by bank. Payoneer's own fees then apply.

FAQ

Your questions, answered.

How much does Paddle charge?

5% + 50¢ per checkout transaction, with no monthly fee. The fee covers payments, sales tax and VAT handling, fraud protection, chargebacks and buyer support. High-volume businesses and products under $10 can ask for custom pricing.

Is Paddle a merchant of record?

Yes. Paddle is the authorised reseller of your software, so it is the seller to your customers and collects and pays sales tax and VAT in more than 100 jurisdictions.

When does Paddle pay out?

Once a month. Your balance becomes a payout on the 1st if it is above your threshold (at least $100) and is sent by the 15th. Payouts go by bank transfer or Payoneer.

Can Paddle pay into Wise?

Yes. Paddle says online accounts such as Wise that give you an IBAN or account number and a BIC can receive payouts. Pick a payout currency that matches the account's local details to avoid the $15 SWIFT fee.

Can I sell courses or services on Paddle?

No. Paddle is for software. Human services not tied to software, such as consulting and coaching, physical products and courses you do not own are on its prohibited list.
